News update -- 8 April 2005 bulletin

This bulletin contains news items from various sources...

From the Archbishop of Sydney's Overseas Relief Aid Fund

Dear Friends

Last December images of people desperately fleeing for their lives trying to escape the engulfing water struck fear and horror into all our hearts. I am sure we all shared feelings of sadness and helplessness for those caught up in an event over which they had no control.

Two weeks earlier 100,000 people had also fled for their lives into the jungle. Those too old or too sick, too young or too frail were left behind to be raped or murdered, to watch their humble mud brick homes destroyed and their livelihoods vanish. These people were victims of the ongoing disturbance in the Congo.

Around the globe there are literally millions who are desperate for help. Whether it is providing emergency assistance in the Congo, medical support in the Andaman Islands or helping marginalised women in Ethiopia, ORAF is committed to supporting the poorest of the poor.

And that support is long term - support not just for the dramatic events, but for the ongoing desperate ones as well. Can we count on your financial commitment at this time? Every donation will help make a difference.

Yours sincerely

Peter F Jensen
Archbishop of Sydney
